Description:
rectangular fragment of printed cotton (toile), red on white, depicting a clearing and two large trees on the right side, from which one goat (?) feeds; other goats stand to the left; a large mountain or volcano stands in the background; in the right foreground are two seals; in the left foreground, the piece is inscribed “JUAN FERNANDES;” this may indicate that the scene is meant to depict a view of the Juan Fernández Islands off the coast of Chile; the right side is hand hemmed, while the other three sides are raw; a few scattered holes throughout, including one approx. 3.5 cm across near the center; white tag attached with safety pin: “28; red, white cotton – Juan Fernandes. MAP”
